Ragdoll Cat Breed Information

Ragdoll Kitten

Ragdoll Kitten

The Ragdoll cat is a large and muscular breed.  Distinguished by it’s blue eyes and soft, silky long coat, this breed often has docile and soft temperament and is particularly affectionate in it’s nature.   The breed name is thought to come from it’s tendency to go limp and relaxed when picked up.

The breed origin for the Ragdoll is a controversial one, but it is thought that the breed has been born out of crossing cats from Persian, Burmese and Siamese origins.

Predominantly an indoor cat, the Ragdoll is one of the largest domesticated cat breeds.  Fully grown these cats are sturdy and will weigh between 3.6 – 6.8 kg for females and 5.4 – 9.1 kg for male cats.  They are also known to like their food! These cats thrive on human contact and love nothing more than having their tummies tickled or climbing onto a lap for cuddles.  As an intelligent breed, the Ragdoll can be easily trained to fetch items, carry things around the house in their mouths or come back to you when called.

Their semi-long coat lacks a dense undercoat, which makes them surprisingly low maintenance when it comes to grooming and their coat doesn’t shed or matt like other longer hair breeds.  Weekly brushing should be sufficient to keep the Ragdoll’s coat tangle free and looking lovely and they generally love the time and attention spent on them.

Ragdoll Cat

This breed is a relatively hardy one that should rarely need veterinary attention.

The Ragdoll breed is available in 6 different colours – seal, lilac, blue, chocolate, cream and flame/red and the tortoiseshell colour can include any number of the coat colours.  All Ragdoll kittens are born completely white, and their markings and colours develop when they’re approximately 8-10 weeks old and finish development when they reach 3/4 years old.  All Ragdoll cats also have beautiful blue eyes.
